Questions from candidates and employers.
Straight answers on how we place transitioning military and veteran leaders into civilian operational roles — the process, the fees, the guarantee, and what makes a good fit.
For Candidates
Who does The Ascent Co. place?
We place transitioning and veteran enlisted military leaders — NCOs, SNCOs, and warrant officers — into civilian operational leadership roles: plant, field, logistics, service, and site leadership. Our focus is operators who have already led teams, owned outcomes, and made decisions under pressure.
Do I have to be actively transitioning to apply?
No. We work with candidates 6 to 18 months out from their EAS or retirement, and with veterans already in civilian roles who are ready for their next step. Submitting your profile early lets us match you to the right opening when it appears, rather than the first opening that appears.
Is there a cost to candidates?
Never. Candidates pay nothing — not for submission, screening, coaching, or placement. Our fees are paid by the employers who hire you.
What kinds of civilian roles do you place veterans into?
Operational leadership roles where military experience translates directly: plant manager, operations manager, distribution center manager, field service manager, area manager, production supervisor, logistics manager, maintenance manager, and site leader. Compensation typically ranges from $85K to $200K+ depending on scope.
How long does the placement process take?
From first conversation to signed offer typically runs four to twelve weeks, depending on the role, your timeline, and employer interview cadence. We move quickly when both sides are ready and never push you into a role that isn't right.
What happens after I submit my profile?
A recruiter reads every submission personally. If your background fits current or anticipated searches, we schedule a call within a week to learn your goals, geography, compensation expectations, and non-negotiables. From there we match you to specific openings — no résumé blasts.
Do you help with résumés or interview prep?
Yes. Once you're actively in a search with us, we help translate your military record into language civilian hiring managers understand, prep you for each specific interview, and debrief afterward. This is included — not a separate service.
For Employers
What makes The Ascent Co. different from a general recruiter?
Our team has led at the enlisted level and in civilian operational roles. That means we can tell the difference between a good résumé and a real leader, and we know which military backgrounds actually map to the role you're trying to fill. You don't get a stack of résumés — you get two or three vetted operators.
How does the engagement work?
After an initial scoping conversation, we sign a search agreement, build the role profile, and start sourcing. You typically see the first vetted slate within two to three weeks. We stay engaged through offer, acceptance, and onboarding, and back the placement with a guarantee period.
What roles do you fill?
Operational leadership across manufacturing, logistics, distribution, field service, energy, construction, and industrial services — plant managers, operations managers, DC managers, area managers, field service leaders, and site leaders. If the role owns people, throughput, safety, or P&L on the ground, it's in our lane.
How are candidates vetted before we see them?
Every candidate is interviewed by a recruiter with operational leadership experience. We score against leadership scope, operational maturity, P&L exposure, technical transfer, and executive presence. Only candidates who clear the bar and match your specific role are submitted.
Do you offer a placement guarantee?
Yes. Placements are backed by a standard replacement guarantee — if a candidate we place leaves or is terminated for cause within the guarantee window, we run the search again at no additional fee.
How much does the service cost?
We work on a contingent or engaged-search basis depending on the role's urgency and difficulty. Fees are a percentage of first-year cash compensation, quoted during the scoping call. There are no fees until a candidate is hired.
What's the employer portal?
After we sign a search agreement, we can provision a private portal for your team to view candidates we've matched to your role, download résumés, and — long term — remit payment. Portal access is invite-only and provisioned by our admin team after the agreement is signed.
